My Review

Away From the Dark by Aleatha Romig is a must read- it is the second book of the Into the Light Duet. It will take you into the world of lies and deceit- truth and forgiveness.
Away From the Dark is gripping and fascinating pulling you into the world of The Light -the good, the bad and all the emotions in between. Aleatha Romig is a mastermind at sprinkling clues throughout the story allowing each piece will fall in place – but not before she is ready to reveal them. Each piece of the puzzle is important and needed to make the story whole- creating a beautiful story that will make your heart beat a little faster.
The characters are well developed and layered- each layer is peeled back slowly. The characters fight an internal battle as the past and present crash together – trust is hard to find when everything you know is a lie.
Away From the Dark will leave you lost in thought- a book hangover and begging for more. It was an amazing read. Readers will fall in love with the hero and heroine- feeling their love, courage and heart break. Aleatha Romig is a talented author- one of few who takes you on a ride that you will never forget.

Sara
Shrill screams echoed throughout our dimly lit bedroom, accelerating my heartbeat and pulling me from the terrible nightmare. I waited for more, until the realization struck. The screams were my own. “Jacob?” I called, my voice shaking with dread as I reached for my husband. Instead of reassurance, my fingers met cold empty sheets. He was gone—still away at another campus. What just happened? Was it a dream? I clung to the covers as I puffed my cheeks and slowly exhaled. While each breath helped to still the chaos, the exercise wasn’t enough. Who am I? Who is he? Jacob’s questions from months ago came back. They were my security. They’d worked before. I am Sara Adams and my husband is Jacob Adams. Pushing the images from my dream, or nightmare, away, I imagined Jacob’s comforting embrace. Slowly I threw back the down comforter and willed the cool air to soothe my perspiration-drenched skin. From the way my heart galloped in my chest, I might have been running a marathon, not sleeping. In my sleep I’d been battling to escape a vehicle, and then an explosion of heat. It had been a dream, I reassured myself—a nightmare. The accident I’d had, nearly nine months before, had been different. I couldn’t remember it, but I’d been told that I’d been injured and gone unconscious. In the nightmare I had been out and away from the wreckage. I shook my head. It seemed so real. In my dream I hadn’t been able to see past the darkness, yet I’d known I wasn’t injured. My arms surrounded my midsection as the memories replayed like pictures in my mind. Someone was hurting me—purposely harming me, and there was a voice—a deep voice. Jacob’s voice? No. He wouldn’t hurt me. My entire body shuddered as goose bumps peppered my skin. Sitting upright, I reached for the bedside lamp. With trembling fingers I turned the knob and my eyes adjusted as the soft light combined with the sun’s perpetual summer glow. I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate on Jacob’s questions. Who am I? Who is he? This time I said the words aloud, praying that if I spoke the truth, the images would disappear. “I am Sara Adams. He is my husband, Jacob Adams.” I pulled myself from the bed and walked to the bathroom. Turning on the light and the faucet, I cupped the cool water and splashed my face. As I reached for the cup and began to fill it, a metaphoric dam that had been constructed to hold back my past burst. My mind was flooded—no longer with simple images, but with scene after scene. For the first time since I could recall, I knew the woman in the mirror.
I knew me.

PROLOGUE
PRESENT
PREPPY
Tiny flashes of dim light spark in the darkened corners of my mind. Slowly, it turns from dusk to dawn, awakening my thoughts as the inner light grows brighter and brighter.
I hear a sound, a faucet running, and I realize it’s the blood rushing through my ears. When it reaches my heart I choke as it comes back to life like a bass drum. Boom. BaBOOM it beats, on and on, until it falls into a quick yet steady rhythm. The new life inside me grows louder, stronger, until death fades away and I awake on a gasp.
My eyes spring open. I try to take in air, but nothing happens. I try again and my lungs burn as they finally decide to cooperate. I can breathe, but it hurts like a son of a bitch.
I’m fucking alive.
My first thoughts shock the shit out of me. They’re of a girl. A sad looking girl with shiny black hair and huge dark eyes sitting on the edge of the water tower.
My heart falls out of rhythm, beating faster and faster until it’s thrumming against my chest like the vibration of a jackhammer.
Her.
Although my vision is blurry as shit, my thoughts of her are clearer than they’d ever been, and for the first time in my adult life, I’m fucking scared.
I don’t even need to see the big motherfucker standing over me with a baseball bat to know I am completely and totally fucked.

Series: Checkmate Duet #1
Author: Kennedy Fox
Genre: Enemies to Lovers Romance
Release Date: October 3
Goodreads
  Synopsis
Travis King is the worst kind of asshole.
He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards.
He’s cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes.
And I hate him.
It wouldn’t matter so much if he were avoidable.
But considering he’s my older brother’s best friend and roommate, I see him more than I’d ever want to.
His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are wasted on such an arrogant man, which makes me hate him even more.
Even though I’ve had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren’t mutual and he’s made that very clear.
He’s always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed.
I’ve succumbed to his manwhore ways, but that doesn’t change a thing.
Because the King is about to get played at his own game—and lose.
Checkmate.

Young handsome macho man with muscle abdominal and open jacket sitting in armchair.

Excerpt

Travis
Once I’m home, I start unbuttoning my shirt and ripping my belt off. I can’t stand being in these clothes any longer than necessary. I don’t see or hear Viola anywhere, although her car is parked in the driveway, so I pull my shirt off and pull my pants down before tossing them on the arm of the couch.
I walk to the kitchen and pull open the fridge to look for a beer. Once I find one, I twist off the cap and slam the door shut again. Just as I take a swig, a girl walks in, who is not Viola and stops frozen in her tracks.
“Who are you?” I ask, fully aware I’m down to my boxers. Her eyes glass over before finally blinking and looking back up to my eyes. “Did you hear me?”
She swallows. “Yes, sorry. You just scared the shit out of me. Viola said her brother wasn’t home.”
“I’m not her brother.” I take another swig, roaming my eyes down her petite little body. “I’m the roommate, Travis.” I say, taking a step toward her. “You must be a friend of Viola’s?”
Before she can answer, I hear Viola stomping toward us. “Don’t touch him, Ash. You’ll catch an STD.”
Her eyes widen, and I’m pretty sure I see her friend take a tiny step back.
“I’m surprised you even know what an STD is, considering you’re a virgin and all.” I flash a wink at her when her friend isn’t looking.
She huffs. “I’m not a vir—gah, never mind. Fuck off, Travis. And put some damn clothes on.”
“I don’t think your friend minds.” I turn and smile at her. “Do you?”
“Uh...I…” she stammers, and a part of me feels bad I’ve put her in the middle.
“Didn’t think so.” I grin, walking past her toward Viola. “Looks like you’re in the minority, princess.”
I sit on the couch and click on the TV. I hear Viola speaking to her friend as they finish bringing in all of her shit. I glance back and see bags lining the floor.
“You realize you’re only staying here for a couple weeks, right?” I shout. “No need to nerd up the place with all your Harry Potter books and capes. Wouldn’t impress my guests.”
“You’re an idiot,” she snaps. “And since when did you consider your one-night stands ‘guests’?”
I turn fully, facing her. Her cheeks are flushed, and I know it’s killing her that she has to be here alone with me. “You want to see how well I treat my guests?” I flash a crooked smile, knowing it’ll rile her right up.
“I wouldn’t let my worst enemy near you,” she fires back, narrowing her eyes at me. Fuck, she’s hot when she gets super pissed. All the more to push her buttons.
I tsk. “If you could keep them away that is…”
I turn back around just as she tells her friend it’s time to go. She whispers a few curse words, and I know this is going to be a lot more fun than I expected.

3.5 Stars!

Several days after finishing this read, I am still trying to gather all my thoughts about this story. I think my issue was that I would assume I knew the direction the relationship of these characters was heading, but then they would take sharp left and I would be thrown off balance. Their relationship began several years ago, when they were just kids, so I think I was expecting a connection on a deeper level than I felt was portrayed in the story.

Viola has had a crush on Travis since she was ten years old. He was the sweet boy next door that made her feel special. Once he broke her heart, the hate took over and is still going strong well into adulthood. By chance, they are stuck together in the same apartment alone. That may bring them together in the physical sense, but the hatred between them still takes center stage.

Travis became the best friend of Viola’s brother after moving in next door. He also became close to Viola. He even developed emotional feelings for her, but things suddenly changed and he worked hard to erase those feelings and move on. And move on he did. And with just about every breathing female in existence. As an adult, that trend continues on, including sleeping with someone that may cause him to lose the career he has worked hard for.

Now that these two have been spending time alone, Travis and Viola’s buried feelings begin to bubble up to the surface…..
But will that stop Travis’s his whoring ways?
Will Viola allow her feelings for him after all of these years take over?
Is this truly an enemies to lovers romance?
Or will the hate continue to take precedence when all is said and done?

Well, we’ll need to wait for those answers because this installment ends with a doozy of a cliffhanger. I am holding out hope that the next book in this series will give me more of the romance I am craving from these stubborn characters.

    ONE STORY. TWO COUPLES.
The Retrieval Duet by Aly Martinez is a two part series.

TRANSFER (Part 2) is NOW AVAILABLE!

Transfer.jpg

Blurb
One story. Two couples.

I fell in love with a man who didn’t exist.

What started out as romance ended in hell.
His words turned to razor blades.
His kisses converted to fists.
His embrace became my cage.
His body transformed into a weapon, stealing parts of me until ultimately….
I broke.

I hated him.
My sole job in life became to protect our daughter.

I wasn’t sure I’d ever escape the prison he’d skillfully crafted from my fears.
Until the day our savior arrived.

This is the story of how I escaped the man who thought he owned me.
The transfer of my life and my family.

Transfer- Teaser #2.jpg

~ Marlene's Review ~

This duet has absolutely floored me. Honestly!

I fell in love with Elisabeth and Roman and their journey in the first installment, Retrieval. Transfer continues the story, but the focus shifts to Clare and her long road to survival and finding love when least expected.

This story is suspenseful, intense, and action packed. But most of all, it is overflowing with unconditional love. Clare has been through hell and is still battling her way out. Our Hero in the story is beyond patient, extremely protective, and willing to risk it all for Clare’s safety. And her heart.

As always, this author provides great writing, a phenomenal storyline, well written characters, and perfect pacing. I highly recommend this two book series!

*You MUST read Retrieval first, the first installment. Transfer is the conclusion to the story.

RETRIEVAL is available and brings readers the first part
of this emotional second chance romance.
